writers write stories

I'm always concerned about addiction and I either deny it or think it doesn't affect me.
The reason for thinking it doesn't affect me is that my mind is my greatest strength, and I believe I can't be conquered.
I'm left with questions because I was substance free yesterday until Tobacco snuff at midnight and the feeling was malaise and depression while recognizing what others would go through in terms of withdrawal if they were using it as a means of escape.
When I am with Mary Jayne and Tobacco, my mind is very active and runs through the gamut of stories and possibilities.
This takes you into your troubles and worries, however it's a whirlwind so everything will pass or at least get blown around.
It's an escape from the reality you have constructed and it's always refreshing to view it as your own doing.
The withdrawal is manageable and if you are active at work, it is not a problem.
I sense it is difficult if you are just sitting around.
Go for a walk.
Then I wondered about Ambil which is a strong Tobacco paste that I have started using and whether that contributes to my worry about addiction.
It definitely contributes and I sensed my mind having different states of operating where it is turbo charged with MJ and Tobacco and then a state of emptiness which I feel as depression in combination with reality which brings the weight of the world down upon your shoulders.
That was something I noticed where the world is always pressing down upon you from which there seems to be no escape.
From this I see why people run from their problems and they are good for a bit until the problems up ahead come into focus all because of their decision to run.
If you don't run from your problems the tidal wave will crash over you, and you pick up the pieces and carry on.
So, you play a game of chicken with the ocean waves until they finally get you.
You are given the option to run from the ocean, however something is always coming for you.
That's the game of life and it is different from the meaning of life.
The meaning is nonsense, and the game is about avoiding destruction.
What's the meaning in all of this?
You are questioning addiction and studying the effects of withdrawal from your regular routine of MJ and Tobacco.
What's the conclusion?
Caffeine is a terrible addiction.
I wouldn't say terrible, however it is a need, or you get head pain and tired for a couple days.
MJ and Tobacco are missed when you step out of your routine.
Is the routine the addiction?
What do you think?
I notice when I don't do things at a certain time then I get the sirens or some agitation.
What are the sirens?
They are an alarm reminding you of your needs.
They aren't unmanageable.
An addiction would incur sirens in which the way to turn off the alarm is to take the substance.
I don't sense that.
Then you're good, Odysseus.

Absurdity is your guide.
We pretend we live in a logical and predictable world.
Cryptocurrency got me thinking, where you wonder what it is?
Currency must hold its value, or you can't trust it as a currency.
All currency is manipulated by those in power however they know to not make the spreads too large, or people won't trust it.
Crypto is volatile and can't really be used as a currency.
Instead, it is speculative.
What is it then?
It's digital and there's nothing tangible about it like gold.
If there was no electricity and means of magnetic storage it would vanish.
No one would know how much they have.
With gold you can hold it in your hands if necessary and it won't go poof.
Crypto takes it up a notch where it's just a number in a digital wallet.
Its value is similar to a painting where its worth is tied to what people think it's worth.
The value of a digital coin, which is a repository for wealth, is determined by the participation of others.
If the participation is withdrawn, then the asset becomes worthless.
It's the ultimate fool where it's marketed as a hedge against fiat currency that is created out of thin air.
A grand pyramid scheme.
The world is a pyramid scheme, don't you read your own writing?
In the stock market there is an underlying business which you are investing in while with Crypto there is nothing.
This is an exercise in trying to explain the absurdity of Crypto.
It's a perfect marker for the foundation of the world.
The world is absurd, and this idea keeps coming back to me.
It's a world of nonsense and this makes Cryptocurrency the definitive demonstration of that principle which of course will show up as time draws near.
You're saying as we reach the end of time, we will reach peak absurdity?
Yes.

It feels like the Ayahuasca shits today and then everyone burping.
Plus, I feel cold.
Could be an alternate reality I find myself in.
One of my own making where I changed the story with Ayahuasca in 2013 and this journey to now is what I crafted where it is now my reality and what I wanted.
Yeah, I'll buy that.
I'm Odysseus and there is the call of family and the call of the enchanters and sirens.
Then you eventually must choose one or the other, and the adventure stops.
Once Odysseus made a choice, Homer stopped writing about him and his story became a legend.
When the game ends and you have played it well, you become a legend.
It's my story.

Feeling bliss.
Beyond knowledge is bliss.
You don't always need knowledge and then you get bliss.
I went through some withdrawal and fear of addiction.
What about now?
Well, it's stopped obviously.
I felt better when I put on a long sleeve shirt and stopped feeling cold.
There seems to be something with the feeling of cold.
Cold causes a vibration much like anxiety.
It makes you act.
Warmth makes you comfortable until it gets too hot.

Lady Datura gives you the keys to your story.
By invitation only.
It's making your own reality.
It's your craft and this is the story you are writing.
That's why your retirement is on track.
You did that by keeping the struggle going.
I kept stories alive.
I thought maybe I'm trapped in a mind maze, but I think this is real.
Nobody is 100% certain and I'm good with that, but I'll go with it's real and I'm crafting my story.
I can see it now.
The flow will take me to the next decision.
If you let others choose and make that your story, then it's balanced.
You let others make the decision and incorporate it into your story.
It's what you do best.

You have given yourself an available path to paranoia and misery.
I see that.
I made many branches which veer off from the main story.
It's like a labyrinth where you can follow any direction you want.
The jaguar's roar at Chavín created by the flow of the two rivers will take you out of the maze.
Or to the minotaur.
That's me.
Now, I'm headed out.
It's your maze.
Yeah, I know the way.
What's the way?
The flow.
Do nothing.
That's how you get out of the maze.
If you do something, you'll get lost.
That's why you wait a couple days to figure stuff out.

Do you think you just drink plant medicines, and nothing happens?
I was clueless.
I kept coming back for the Goddess.
I didn't know about power.
Don Howard kept saying stuff about it and it's a test.
You'll get scared away or hypnotized.
You can't do what you did.
I was an accidental Ayahuasca tourist.
You were definitely unique.
You went to drink Ayahuasca in order to find the Great Goddess.
It worked.
Yeah, but that's not the reason people drink that brew.
I wasn't taking advantage of the power available by drinking plant medicines.
You should have been chased away.
Plant medicines will defeat you and send you on your way.
You kept showing up.
The only way to avoid that is to give in to power or become of service.
I didn't know what I was doing.
Now, I see it.
Lady Datura sends you packing or gives you power.
She's an ally.
They all are.

Isn't this what you want?
Yes.
Then you see how it works.
I didn't ask for it.
No, you didn't.
You hung around.
Did nothing.
It's the substitute for knowing you have the power.
Do nothing and you will be good.
When you do something, you set up the karma thing.
You let Dionysos take care of it.
He balances it out.
How?
By you doing nothing.
Got it.
Just go with the flow.
Play along.

If you do nothing it's Dion's story.
Yes, he wrote it for you.
You're the actor.
Right.
If you believe Dion is the Devil you'd see you are playing the Devil's story.
That would frighten the shit out of you.
You couldn't do nothing.
Those doing something are trying to get away from the Devil because they see they are playing his story.
Clever bastard.
If you do nothing, to others it looks like you are in league with the Devil.
That's why they say you are psychotic.
They can't believe you'd take it this far.
If you know it's the writer's story, you do nothing.
It's his story obviously.
That's a mind puzzle no one can solve.
Right, because they believe in the Devil.
They might not have until they drank plant medicines, and at first they start to believe in God and then the Devil story will hit you.
Then you stop and change gears.
Maybe run.
Some combine the two into the divine masculine and worship an idol.
I say the Devil is a character the writer made up.
A great character.
For sure.
I'll sometimes play that character at night to scare people.
To get to the writer you must discover God and the Devil are actors.
Then you audition for the part.
Exactly.

There's less of a flow of knowledge into your head.
Yes, it has slowed.
It's the flow.
You could take more MJ, but you would lose some of the bliss you are feeling.
It's very blissful.
Half knowledge and half stoned.
Balanced.
Master of the juggle.
Keep it going as long as you can.
Vary the dose.
Some get stoned right away and they don't know what this state is.
You know it's the place you go to as the writer when he wants a break.
Also, at death.
Well, that's a break.
We are storytellers when you get down to it.
The stoners don't know what that distortion is and the manic never get here.
Their minds race and the spin is too much.

It's my story.
You're in control.
Something like that.
I know I won't give up my story.
Yeah, you can see it.
When you give up your story it's curtains.
On one level they try to take your story.
Who are they?
Your opponents.
Witches.
It's a game.
Your opponent tries to take your story and turn you into a puppet.
You come off as so controllable.
Yeah, the crazy ones get that excited look in their eyes when they meet me and plot how they can take over my story.

Only you can stomach doing nothing.
Don't knock it; it is very difficult to do nothing.
That's the power of doing nothing.
It's hard to do nothing.
Practice.
Do the small things like walking and sleeping.
Getting life advice on a walk.

I feel content.
Yesterday, I felt depressed.
Is this addiction because I'm with Mary Jayne and Tobacco and I feel great.
Sometimes, it's a blast of unease or spin.
What's that?
It's a state where I'm like okay we can take this down a notch.
I got that with Ayahuasca a bunch.
That's the state that prevents addiction.
Addiction will make you feel good and then bad.
Does MJ make you feel bad?
No.
There is darkness, however I welcome it now.
I didn't at first.
So, you are always questioning whether you are addicted?
Yes.
Good.

chasing the goddess

Chasing the Goddess in Ayahuasca ceremonies has revealed that there is something alluring about the continual chase. The teasing and playing hard to get is very attractive to my senses and desires. My life is pretty even steven, some would say mundane, and the world of the Goddess is topsy turvy chaos. It’s the cosmic sleigh ride that I try to smooth out and I know I’ve done that to a degree because that’s what I do with everything in life. I'm so good at it, thank you very much. My next time drinking la medicina I have to let go to wild abandon and take the untravelled path to who knows where.

I think that’s part of the reason why some shamans start adding things to the brew like toé. It’s a deliriant and makes the whole ceremony quite the mind fuck, like out of control crazy, and lots of seekers are attracted to that, especially the seasoned drinkers. I don’t think that is necessarily a path you have to travel when you think you are stuck. Instead of trying to temper the experience and tame the Goddess therefore bringing you to a perceived dead end, you have to let go. Self defence is the go to in all of the psychedelics because the bad trip is always lurking in the background. When you are new to the experience you have trepidation for sure but you can’t possibly imagine the horrors of a bad trip until you actually experience it. And then when you experience this kind of trip it shakes you to the core of your foundation and for most of us western people it is the first time we experience full on terror. Psychologically we then put up defences to that fear as that is a pretty natural thing to do. It takes a hell of a lot of courage to go back and face that fear. Underlying every ceremony from then on is a defence mechanism enacted to combat the debilitating terror once experienced. Curiously for me there was something always drawing me back to the experience, I mean it’s the mother lode. All you have been searching for you found but there’s this chance when you go back that you’ll get destroyed again. However staying on this path and continuing on with la medicina reaches a point where you have to make a decision. You can always stop and say you had your meaningful experiences of a lifetime but it is now time to move on. The lessons were invaluable but I’ve reached the limit and Mother Ayahuasca is telling me there is nothing more for me. I felt that in the third ceremony last time down in March. For some there is a call to move on to a different plant medicine and their teachings or there is what I described earlier where you start adding powerful plants to the brew that modulates the effect and head off in a direction that maybe isn’t the best choice for you.

I followed a few people on social media that drank Ayahuasca quite a bit. They all eventually stopped, citing among their reasons that she had abandoned them, there were no more teachings, she turned on them, or they had a new calling. Answers to inner conflict that we project onto external actors are usually resolved by once again looking inward. I can pretty much guarantee that the reasons cited in regards to Ayahuasca and your relationship with it have to do with your own hangups and blockages. Simply put it is a test to see where you want to go with it and how dedicated you are, especially when confronted with a problem such as this.

50,000 years ago our brains were as developed as they are now however as hunter gatherers our focus was on survival. I was walking through the forest with my dog and marvelled at the fact I had the opportunity to ponder because all I need for survival is taken care of by society. For sure this has many detriments but a huge positive is the time allotted to think about existence. Who am I and why am I here? This instead of what am I going to catch to eat plus I need to make sure I have shelter and a heat source. There is a bit of a tie in here where at one point in the past human life was a constant adventure, full of adrenaline, and not much downtime. We have tamed that aspect of life and have domesticated ourselves. This has led to civilization, an allowing for philosophy, and to ponder our existence. I was thinking this parallels my experience with Ayahuasca where it was pretty wild at first until I did my best to tame the experience. What I can learn from this is that by taming the experience now the teachings can be accelerated if you stay with the program. It’s a test or a fork in the road where the relationship has evolved and though you may wish to go back and relive those crazy ceremonies it is in fact time to move on to even more advanced lessons. Well there is always more as don Howard likes to say.

When I drank the last cup of Ayahuasca in the summer of 2016 I transformed into a jaguar and it was one of those touchstone moments where I knew the chapter had come to an end and my relationship with Ayahuasca was going to change from here on in. The fear had dissipated and I sensed I could work with the medicine now. I didn’t drink again for two and a half years and when I returned the experience was markedly different. There was no fear, just a little anxiety, but I sensed I could work with Ayahuasca and be partners with her however deep down inside I realize I have to let go because I’m still holding back. If I sincerely want to continue the relationship I have to make the commitment and by commitment I mean I have to let go and dive down deep. I sense there is much more to this but I’ve reached another door that I have to open and venture on into. It is another unknown on this most awesome path and one for the brave who can let go and just venture off onto the path less travelled. It’s like another locked door and an application process that the majority of seekers just move on from instead of putting in the effort or using their senses of perception and intuition to realize that this is just a temporary roadblock on the path and that in order to continue on there is another act of surrender to take place. It is a surrender of strength without a need for fear or to think you are weak. It involves courage to give up control and let another take you into unchartered territory.

She’s inviting me in. My hand is out and I will let her be my guide.

holy moly

I am enraptured somewhat by the tale of Circe, the sorceress of Greek mythology, and as a corollary to this fascination is an interest in the perennial called mandrake. The mandrake is synonymous with witchcraft and maintains a connection through the ages to Circe. I have been researching the properties and effects of the psychoactive alkaloids present within the mandrake which curiously makes an appearance in the Old Testament as an aphrodisiac, and then going further back into antiquity there is a connection to the ancient Egyptian goddess Hathor. The fruits of the mandrake are called love apples and Hathor, among her many attributes, is the Mistress of Intoxication and the Goddess of Love, from which the Greek goddess Aphrodite shares a connection. The mandrake seems to have come to ancient Egypt from the Middle East in the pharaonic 18th dynasty as it was found in the tomb of the pharaoh Tutankhamen and it started appearing as an offering to Hathor in the Egyptians' art at this time as well as in love songs of the era. In the Old Testament, Jacob's wife Rachel exchanges a night with Jacob for her sister Leah in order to gain possession of the mandrakes Leah's son Reuben had brought home. The mandrake is then presumably used as an aid to help the childless Rachel conceive and as a result she gives birth to Joseph. Later on in the Old Testament, the mandrake is mentioned in the Songs of Solomon, which for all intents and purposes are love poems to the Great Goddess.

The mandrake is from the solanaceae family of plants and this piqued my interest since these are sorcerer plants - the venerable nightshades and daturas.

mandrake

An effective dose of these plants can cause delusions, hallucinations, amnesia, and a high degree of suggestibility. The mandrake also has a history of being used medicinally and as mentioned above in love potions; so, as with most remedies the difference between a medicine and a poison lies in preparation and dosage.

The tale of Circe that interests me is from Homer's Odyssey where Odysseus and his crew arrive on her island and are invited to a feast. Along the way, they meet strangely docile lions and wolves. Circe is singing an enchanting song and working a huge loom as half of Odysseus' crew arrives at her clearing in the forest and sit down to a sumptuous banquet. Circe laces a beverage with her sorcerer's drugs and then turns the men into swine. After hearing of his men's fate, Odysseus sets out with the remainder of his crew to save them but he is stopped along the way by the wise messenger god Hermes, who was sent by the goddess Athena, and he instructs Odysseus in the use of a plant called moly which will counteract the effects of Circe's drugs. After avoiding her trap, Odysseus threatens Circe with his sword and gets her to free his men from her enchantment. After this, Circe invites Odysseus to her bed; however, Odysseus suspects treachery, and as he was counselled earlier by Hermes to get her to swear to the gods she would not harm him, he remains free from her spell. Eventually, Odysseus stays on the island with Circe for a year before he continues on his journey back home to Ithaca.

Angelica Kauffmann's painting of Circe enticing Odysseus, 1786

Within this myth are many elements that invite a closer look. First of all, the turning of Odysseus' men into swine along with the tame beasts surrounding Circe's home is tainted with misogyny. This suggests women are to blame for making men veer off their own personal hero's journey and causing them to lose their ability to reason, instead of pinning it on perhaps their own doing. The underlying idea here is that the pursuit of women will bewitch and destroy the fortitude of men. In relation to this idea is the necessary sexual relationship between Circe and Odysseus, which depicts women as using sex and pleasure if the drugs don't work to gain control over men. As well, Circe at her loom is representing weaving a spell to keep those within her sphere of influence enchanted. When Hermes gives Odysseus the secret of moly to counteract the spell it symbolizes that wisdom is the antidote to the enchantment. Metaphorically, the enchantment can also be thought of as the love of the pleasures of the world; the world symbolized by the feminine Circe and the loom representing the weaving of the world into existence. It turns the man on a journey of adventure and discovery of self, his true calling, into a tamed beast once he tastes the finer pleasures of the world. This all ties in to the idea of Circe as the original femme fatale. The name Circe brings to mind the circus ring where the enchanted beasts put on a great show for all. This idea of a ring or circle is prevalent in magic, witchcraft, and sorcery and in relation to this idea, Odysseus stays for one year with Circe so the sun can complete a revolution; in essence a full circle.

The idea of Circe representing the seductive pull of getting lost in the sensuous pleasures of incarnation really fascinates me. From an Eastern perspective, this is related to the idea of Maya. In this regard Maya is impermanence and therefore illusory, so the pursuit of worldly treasures is a fool's errand. Being constantly tricked by this delusion keeps you trapped on the wheel of Samsara, going round and round in this carnival; ah the old Merry Go Round riding the tamed beasts! Every successive incarnation into the game of life is the result of the forgetfulness and thinking this time it really is going to be magical. The pull and attachment to carnal desires remains strong until you can finally break free. Circe, the carnival, and the circus are all symbolizing this predicament. When you are ready, Athena sends Hermes, the wise messenger god, to give you the knowledge necessary to break free of your chains.

Now in terms of the drugs Circe is using, it is through folklore and tradition thought to be the mandrake as it has been called the drug of Circe and within some languages the Mandrake has been given a name connecting it to Circe, such as in the Latin ciceron. As I mentioned above, the mandrake is related to the daturas, and in my travels and involvement with Amazonian shamanism, I am familiar with these plants called toé in the Amazon basin and I have ingested them as part of an Ayahuasca brew. When I drank Ayahuasca with a high content of toé, I experienced the most harrowing and dark night of my life. In my opinion, Ayahuasca is a teacher plant and when it works with the daturas it gives you a lesson in the power and control your dark side has over you. I did experience hallucinations and delusions during and following the ceremonies for a few days afterwards and was also very open to suggestion, so much so that I followed the voice in my head that told me I should leave the place I was at and go home. But enough of my experience with these plants because what is strange about the use of datura and its relationship to Circe is the antidote to its effects being the plant called moly.

Historians and scholars have taken up the task of trying to identify moly. As with all things found in the murky waters of antiquity there is more than one possibility, though one of the identifications I find quite striking. Moly has been identified by some scholars as a plant called peganum harmala.

peganum harmala

Well, I know my entheogens so I know this plant is used as an Ayahuasca analogue in places where Ayahuasca cannot be found or is illegal. The alkaloids within peganum harmala mimic those found within the Ayahuasca vine. Putting this altogether, we have the goddess Athena getting the wisdom god Hermes to go and deliver a message to Odysseus to ingest an Ayahuasca analogue to counteract the enchantment and trappings of the material world represented by Circe. Thousands of people a year currently seeking answers to the vexing questions of life are doing just that in spiritual quests down into the Amazon jungle or within Ayahuasca circles springing up in many places throughout the world.

To conclude this tale of worldly trappings and delusion I am reminded of the seductive pull of Los Angeles on those egos infatuated with the grandeur of self and the desire for fame. The song "Hotel California" by the Eagles sums it up, describing the pull of losing yourself completely within the illusion.

Hotel California
On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night.
There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself
'This could be heaven or this could be Hell'
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say
Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face.
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year (any time of year) you can find it here
Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes bends
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys, that she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget
So I called up the Captain,
'Please bring me my wine'
He said, 'we haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty-nine'
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say"
Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face.
They livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise), bring your alibis
Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice
And she said, 'we are all just prisoners here, of our own device'
And in the master's chambers,
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives,
But they just can't kill the beast
Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before
'Relax' said the night man,
'We are programmed to receive.
You can check out any time you like,
But you can never leave!'
